[NEW INTERVIEW] Bill & Tom Kaulitz: "Our story is a Cinderella story"

Bill and Tom Kaulitz take part this year in the new jury of the talent show "Deutschland sucht den Superstar", it starts on January 5 at 20.15pm on RTL. Well-known and famous, they were the twins of "Tokio Hotel" band, with which they have sold countless plates and toured all over the world. Bill and Tom, hitting the "superstars", one is immediately pleasantly surprised: the two are polite, courteous, bigger than you'd think and they clearly differ from each other. But they agree - the show is a great fun for them - and they will be for the audience and their fans ...

TVdirekt: Why did you decided to be the DSDS judges?

Bill: We have opted for this show because it is the most successful talent show. The winner also gets a perfect introduction into the music business. It guarantees a number one hit and a hit album and gets almost half a million euros. That's an incredible amount of money, so you can then also make a lot as a musician.
Tom: It also gave us time fits well, we would not now done, we could have never make it.
Bill Kaulitz: American Idol is a show in which we believe the most. The classic casting with a great platform for the winner.

TVdirekt: Had you a so desired entry for Tokio Hotel?

Tom: We had a lot of luck!
Bill: Yes, our story is a Cinderella story out there in the music business, that's is. We were discovered in the classic live club in our hometown. When I look back, I think it is amazing how it worked out that we found someone in our town club.
Tom: We were absolute newcomer, got our first record deal with really small budget for marketing and video. Get such a success without a platform like American Idol, is incredibly lucky.
Bill: Today record companies just don't give that anymore. There are hardly any talent scouts more like ten years ago, looking for bands and invest in them. As a young musician, especially when you come from the country, you have no way to show your talent. How do you want it from the village, from a small town with your talent to create somewhere? Also, we did not know then how we should do it, whether and how we should send a demo to a record company. The show features the very good entry into the business and when it is the first time there, it is on your own, what you make it.
Tom: I think that is exactly what the people becoming more conscious! These Castings gradually get another call, as they had used to be. Previously, people said, casting, is it necessary? Meanwhile, casting is always accepted and respected. The music business has changed so dramatically that it is the only way to get added to a hot success. We were in Germany one of the few recent bands that were able to create in a natural way. Today it is different ... In America great artists sit in the talent shows as jurors to give the necessary input.
Bill Kaulitz: Mariah Carrey and Nicki Minaj take part in American Idol. Moreover, rock legend Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears sit in the casting juries and look at people, because this is a great way to find new talent.
Tom: We want to give the people behind the scenes advices for a career, and help them as they intruduce themselves into the music business

TVdirekt: How did the auditions go? Did you discovered your true talent?

Bill: We have high hopes. First, we have nine days of castings in Berlin and saw hundreds of people. That was exhausting, I must admit, but it has been fun. In recall, we had the read-out of 71 talents there. As we learned later, there are usually 120th so we were very strict.
Tom: But strictly cute!
Bill: We have great candidates and further behind in the recall, the 36 contestants chosen went with us. We are happy to have good singers and personalities here.
Tom: When you recall, some of which one has high hopes from the casting, but which have totally screwed it suddenly. In this first real test to see just who is the pressure and who is not. We had a super location, the coaches were already at work, and the candidates had only 24 hours to rehearse the song. A few people have disappointed and a few of them have surprised.

TVdirekt: How the candidates react to you?

Bill: We weren't even known behind the cameras, but there are certainly one or the other, leaving the room and totally gets going and they are excited about what we have said. We have had one or two candidates...
Tom: There was one, we had to tell that it was not enough. And since you got attention, where you feel the need to cleanse themselves spiritually only once.
Bill: There was one who has got to be real. It was a moment where I was like "wow"! I did not expect. Which was really unfair, it's begin to discuss and make a huge story. He said he thought shit from us, that we would bring him and make fun of. I stopped him and told him that this is not in our interest. Everyone gets his fair chance and we want to have great singers. Some can not withstand the casting and then fly out. But that one knows in advance!
Tom: Let's see what they say to the cameras into the backstage. We only see that in the show.

TVdirekt: How hard is to be a superstar?

Bill: Many people are not aware of what it means to live this life. It's in our choice, process is not just about good voices and great singers. It's also about who can act all the trappings. For this, the show is a good start, because the candidates get an immediate crash course. You are on TV at the beggining and you are constantly surrounded by cameras. You must specify the beginning of interviews, in the live shows overloaded enormous media pressure on them. If you do that, you'll make everything that comes after it. At the auditions, it is important to see who has what it takes to deal with such a life. We had to tell candidates that they are too young and fragile to survive in the business. That they never lead a life that can lift it, that it would be wrong for them.

TVdirekt: Is that your strength on the jury? Can people in this regard assess?

Tom: Now I would not call it only strength ... (laughs), but our experience is definitely an advantage. We had just the beginning of our career with a big media push around, so we can well understand what people in the stage are going through.

TVdirekt: Now you live mainly in Los Angeles. Are you both met on the street like stars and go for a coffee?

Tom: Yes, we have to deal in LA with other artists. But it is not the rule that you meet Stars on the road, it's more like a myth I think. But since you're asking the wrong...(laughs)
